On the 22/02/17 a trip was arranged to visit Imperial University to listen to a talk by Dr Corrine Hanlon, particularly about her career as a female engineer. We also received a campus tour and learned about her PHD research on spinal burst fractures, how they are caused and how they can be treated. As a mechanical engineer who did her PHD in the biomedical engineering field, it was interesting to see the overlap between the two areas of study, as well as earning more about how finite element analysis was used.

It was incredibly useful to hear her advice having completed a PHD as well as the pros and cons of a route into academia, and her roles at both ICL and QMUL on outreach and recruitment. This opened our eyes to the vast choices of careers within the engineering field.
