Today in the SEMS Seminar room we had the honour of inviting Professor Hazel Screen to deliver a talk to our members about her career, particularly her journey into the engineering field as a female professional.
Professor Hazel’s background is in tissue engineering, and she has done research on tendons, looking at the mechanics of tendons and other soft tissues, as well as looking into mechanotransduction. She has worked for IMechE and has been a senior lecturer in biomedical engineering at QMUL.
We gained valuable insights about the career, as well as learning about her early influences and her impressive career from start to present day, from life as a student to a lecturer. Additionally, hearing about her research was very interesting, which is mainly in tendons, but is progressing into using Ultrasound to be able to see tendons in real time in vivo, which would greatly benefit patients and tendon research alike.
Everyone has humble beginnings, but seeing the successes of Professor Screen and the hard work and perseverance that has gone into reaching to this point in her career was very inspiring ad it motivated us to dream big and make use of every opportunity.

This talk is one of many talks we have provided as a society from female engineering and materials science lecturers and staff at SEMS to share with you each of their journey’s and career progressions as women who, even in the 21st Century, are a minority in STEM subjects and professions.
